African Scenic Safaris Earns Travelife Certification

African Scenic Safaris is a Travelife Certified Tanzania Tour Operator. We were first certified in 2023 and recertified in 2025, with our current certification valid through 2027.

This matters to us because it is not based on what we say about ourselves. Travelife Certified status is awarded after an independent on-site audit against a published international standard, and companies are reassessed every two years to confirm they still meet it.

Our connection with Travelife started earlier. In 2017, African Scenic Safaris became a Travelife Partner in Sustainability Management. We were among the first tour companies on the Tanzanian mainland to reach that stage. From there, we continued to build our sustainability work across our office, trips, suppliers, mountain operations, waste management, community work, and guest communication.

Reaching the certified level in 2023 showed that our efforts had evolved into a broader company-wide system, assessed against criteria aligned with the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC).

What Is Travelife?

Travelife is a training, management, and certification program for tourism companies working towards sustainability.

For tour operators and travel agencies, Travelife provides a clear system for managing social and environmental impact. It helps companies improve how they work with staff, suppliers, guests, communities, and the environment.

To become Travelife Certified, a tour operator must meet more than 200 sustainability criteria covering environmental management, climate action, biodiversity, working conditions, human rights, local communities, supply chain management, and customer communication.

The Travelife Certification Stages

Travelife is a three-stage program, and companies work through it in order.

Stage 1: Travelife Engaged — This is the first stage. The company commits to sustainability and begins implementing management procedures. A Sustainability Co-ordinator receives a personal Travelife certificate, and the company begins applying basic good practices.

Stage 2: Travelife Partner — At this stage, the company prepares a sustainability report and meets basic requirements assessed by Travelife. African Scenic Safaris reached Travelife Partner status in 2017. This was a key step in our sustainability work because it helped us organize our efforts more effectively.

Stage 3: Travelife Certified — This is the certified stage. An independent auditor assesses the company against the international Travelife Certified standard through an on-site assessment. The requirements are stronger than at Partner level. African Scenic Safaris reached this stage in 2023.

What This Means for African Scenic Safaris

Travelife certification shows that our responsible tourism work is not handled as a side activity. It is part of how we operate.

Certification requires a structured sustainability policy rather than a set of good intentions, and it holds us to it across the whole business: how we employ and pay our teams, how we choose and assess suppliers, how we manage waste and environmental impact on tours and in the office, how we support local communities, and how we talk to guests about all of it. The specifics are set out below in the section Practical actions behind the certification.

This is important because our work takes place in areas that need long-term care. Kilimanjaro, the Serengeti, local villages, safari routes, riverbanks, and mountain trails are not just travel locations. They are living, working, and community spaces.

Our Responsible Tourism Work

Our sustainability work spans various aspects of different organizations.

  • Through Path to Africa, we support local families and grassroots projects.
  • Through Hostel Hoff, we support responsible volunteer recruitment and local social enterprise projects helping women and children.
  • On the environmental and welfare side, we are a KPAP partner on Mount Kilimanjaro, supporting fair and ethical treatment of mountain crews, guides, porters, cooks, and support teams, who are an important part of every climb, and whose welfare is part of responsible mountain travel.
  • As Carbon Tanzania members, we use carbon measurement tools to help reduce both our own and our clients' carbon footprints.
  • Our guides and mountain crews are trained and certified through the Leave No Trace project. This helps us protect trails, campsites, and fragile mountain areas.

We also follow strict waste management protocols on safari and on the mountain, and we support Responsible Tourism Tanzania by applying their best practices in our work.

Practical Actions Behind the Certification

Travelife certification is linked to practical work. For African Scenic Safaris, this includes actions such as:

  • Reducing waste during safaris and Kilimanjaro climbs
  • Sourcing local ingredients for mountain kitchens
  • Supporting local community projects
  • Working with responsible suppliers
  • Supporting fair treatment of Kilimanjaro crews
  • Using carbon measurement tools through Carbon Tanzania
  • Training teams through Leave No Trace
  • Sharing responsible travel guidance with guests

These aren't one-off gestures; they are built into how we operate. They are part of how we run our trips and manage our impact.

What It Means for our Guests

When guests travel with African Scenic Safaris, they are choosing a company whose sustainability work has been independently reviewed.

That means their safari or Kilimanjaro climb supports more than a travel experience. It supports local employment, community projects, fairer mountain operations, responsible suppliers, and better environmental practices.

Travelife certification gives guests a clearer way to understand that we measure, check, and maintain our sustainability commitments.

Our Commitment Continues

Certification is not a finish line. Travelife reassesses certified companies every two years, so companies must meet the standard again each cycle rather than once.

For African Scenic Safaris, sustainability is ongoing work. It is in how we plan trips, treat our teams, work with suppliers, manage waste, and support local communities.

Our aim remains simple: to operate in a way that benefits Tanzania, its people, its wildlife, and its future. Want to travel to Tanzania with us? You can talk to our experts, who will guide you towards your dream travel in the country.
