Do you dream of being up close and personal with nature, truly feeling it with every sense in your being? Smelling the dusty red earth and hot, dry rocks or the lush long grasses after rain; feeling the wind in your hair and the sun on your face; hearing the soft murmurs and whispers of animals going about their daily business; exploring the habitats of smaller animals that you may miss from a vehicle; deeply exploring the national parks and conservation areas of Tanzania on foot? If so, this Tanzania Closer To Nature safari is for you! Close to our hearts and closer to nature, taking you on a journey through the greatest parks of Northern Tanzania in Safari In Tanzania, from different perspectives.
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) you will be met and transferred to your accommodation to recover from your journey.
Fly to the western corridor of Serengeti National Park, one of the most famous game parks in Africa. Upon arrival you will be collected and driven to your lodge. Enjoy an afternoon game drive on the Grumeti River circuit, heading back to the lodge for late afternoon tea followed by dinner. Later in the evening, venture out to explore the nocturnal sights and sounds of Serengeti on a night game drive, when the bush truly comes to life!
On day 3, you have the chance to explore the Grumeti Corridor on foot, getting closer to nature and into the wild. Learn about the flora and fauna and the wide variety of animals living here. Return to the lodge for late lunch and a little relaxation.
Overnight Western Serengeti
After breakfast this morning, you will head to Central Serengeti. Your guide will choose the best wildlife viewing locations for the time of year. Spend time at the hippo pool, watching these enormous animals laze about in the cool water alongside the crocodiles, watch a lion stalking its prey or be staggered by the scale of the great wildebeest migration. The journey from wide, open plains to the kopjes, volcanic rocky outcrops that provide protection and shelter for a wide variety of animals. This diverse and interesting landscape will provide you with the ultimate in-game viewing.
Another chance to explore on foot, this time soaking up the history and atmosphere of the Olduvai Gorge, the Cradle of Mankind. One of the most important paleoanthropological sites in the world, it has proven invaluable in furthering understanding of early human evolution. This walking tour will extend to the Shifting Sand Dunes, formed by volcanic ash; the Ol Karien Gorge where Ruppel’s Griffon Vultures can be seen soaring high above; and Nasera Rock, a monolith that provides climbers with magnificent views of the plains nearby. Here you can enjoy your picnic lunch. In the late afternoon continue with your driver to the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater overnight.
On the morning of day six, you will drive for a short distance to Empakaai Crater, where you will be treated to splendid views and hopefully a glimpse of Ol Doinyo L’Engai, Tanzania’s only active volcano. You will descent into the Empakaai Crater, taking approximately 30 minutes. There is superb birding around the lake and buffalo, hyena and elephant can be spotted. After 2 to 3 hours of walking in Empakaai, jump back in the car to head to Olmoti Crater for your final hike of the day. At Olmoti, a Maasai name meaning cooking pot, you will have the chance to see Maasai herders grazing their cattle and soak up views of the beautiful highlands of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The gentle ascent takes you through mountain forest, grassland, and rocky outcrops.
Today you will journey into the heart of the wondrous Ngorongoro Crater. Spend the full day on the crater floor. Ngorongoro is unique in that almost all the wildlife lives within the crater walls, hence you have the opportunity to find the game easily. Rhino in particular can be seen regularly, as well as prides of lion and other predators like cheetah. Enjoy lunch by the hippo pond and later commence your drive to Tarangire National Park.
Tarangire is a sanctuary for an unusually large elephant population. Majestic baobab trees are an interesting feature of the park. Animals concentrate along the Tarangire River, which provides the only permanent water supply in the area. There is a great diversity of wildlife including lions, leopards, cheetah, and up to six thousand elephants. Day 8 is flexible, and you can choose to either split your day into morning and afternoon game drives with lunch back at camp or a full-day game drive.
Day 9 is your last chance to enjoy the beautiful wildlife of Tanzania. Again, you have a choice of activities. You may choose to have a leisurely breakfast and relax at the camp, having gone out on a late-game drive the previous night. Alternatively, after breakfast, you could head out on foot to get closer to the animals along the famous Tarangire River. Of course, if you really can’t choose, you could do both! After lunch commences your drive back to Moshi/Arusha.
Day 8: Overnight Tarangire
Day 9: Overnight Moshi/Arusha
Today you will be transferred back to Zanzibar International Airport in time for your flight.
